DC for the Summer

So I thought I would share...I was offered a summer internship in DC with an organization I really really wanted to work for. I will be there for 2 months from June to August, but know absolutely nothing about the area. What are the up and coming neighborhoods to live in? Where are the fun areas to shop? What restaurants are good?
Where should I avoid when wandering around trying to find all of things mentioned above?

Congrats! Am looking forward to hearing more about it. Now I know nothing about DC but I believe Ali from www.alilovescurtis.blogspot.com is moving there soon, so you should get in touch with her. Good luck.

Most interns live on Capitol Hill, but Mount Pleasant/Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan are better areas. 14th Street has a lot of great shops, new bars (Marvin and Cork) and generally a lot going on. There's more and more to do in DC, so you will have a great summer. Have fun!

I'm moving there too!!! I'll be living in Arlington, but should you want to explore the DC area together I could use someone with a sense of direction. I lack one entirely.

Washington? Seems to be the place where Americans intern a lot. We don't really have an equivalent phenomenon in Canada...

Hi! So glad I stopped by. I interned in D.C. for three summers. It's a MAGICAL place; you're going to have a fantastic time. My first summer, I lived in a George Washington University dorm in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. The next summer, I lived closer to Maryland, a few blocks from the Friendship Heights metro stop. The last summer, I lived near Georgetown, my favorite neighborhood, although it doesn't have its own metro stop. I'd suggest living as close to the metro as possible so you don't have to walk so much. Have fun!

I just now found your blog. Not sure you're in DC yet, but I've lived her probably longer than you've been alive. I'd be happy to offer any pointers....
